GreyHats CTF 2023

The GreyHats CTF 2023 event, jointly organized by the National Cybersecurity R&D Lab (NCL) and NUS Greyhats, took place from July 15th to 16th, 2023, at the School of Computing, National University of Singapore. The event witnessed the participation of 90 finalists who formed 15 teams, including 5 international teams and 10 local teams. These 90 finalists had previously competed in the GreyHats qualifier rounds and successfully qualified for the NUS GreyHats CTF 2023 event. The qualifier rounds attracted participation from more than 1600 individuals representing 454 teams (314 international teams & 140 local teams).

Greyhats is the largest student-led information security interest group based in NUS. The members of Greyhats are enthusiastic students with strong technical skills, keen to spread the love of cyber-exercises. NCL is a research lab established in 2015, funded by National Research Foundation, under the National Cybersecurity R&D (NCR) Programme. It aims to become an established R&D hub that facilitates the growth of a Singapore cybersecurity ecosystem. With years of experience in research and its translation, NCL aims to impart valuable skills and expertise to students through this Capture-the-Flag competition.

On 14th of July 2023, both the international and local teams gathered in NUS to familiarize themselves with the campus and test the Wi-Fi connectivity settings, in preparation for the actual competition.

The actual CTF competition commenced on 15 July 2023 at 9.30am. It was carried out in the style of “King of the Hill”. Scores accumulated by participants carried over to the following day, and all teams continued to complete challenges, following the same competition style and format on 16 July 2023. This two-day challenge promises to push participants to their limits and showcase their Cybersecurity skills in a challenging, simulated environment.

The top 3 teams were awarded medals and cash prizes at the end of the competition. The winning teams are:

  • No rev/pwn no life (China) - First Place
  • DiceGang (USA) - Second Place
  • Social Engineering Experts (SG) - Third Place

We would like to extend our heartfelt gratitude to our sponsors Cyber Security Agency of Singapore (CSA), The Digital and Intelligence Service, and Bakkhos Labs for their invaluable support in making this event happen and ensuring its success.

In addition to our sponsors, we would also like to extend a special thanks to the NUS School of Computing for the event venue and the organising committee from NUS Greyhats for their hard work and effort in making this event successful.
